The Northwest Volunteer Light Brigade was inspired by a science fiction photo documentary by Michael Williams. In this story, composed of twenty images of night sky events with titles and captions, the Light Brigade uses photon beams to vaporize an alien mothership intent on destroying human civilization. However, an alien scout escapes and plants a colony on Mt. St. Helens. So, Michael organized the NW Light Brigade to destroy the colony and coincidentally create the world's largest artificially lit photograph.
